Widespread signs of an unexpected diagnosis

A 53-year-old male patient was referred for endoscopic assessment due to abdominal pain and weight loss. His medical history was unremarkable. The esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed multiple erythematous polypoid lesions with focal erosions in the cardia, gastric body, antrum, and duodenum. Colonoscopy showed multiple lesions with similar morphology throughout the colon. Biopsies of these lesions revealed dilated vessels associated with sheets of proliferating spindle cells. Immunohistochemistry for HHV-8 confirmed the diagnosis of Kaposi’s Sarcoma. Subsequent tests confirmed the diagnosis of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), with a CD4 count of 297/mm3. The patient was started on antiretroviral therapy and chemotherapy with pegylated doxorrubicin.
