Cavernous hemangioma of the sigmoid colon : a rare cause of rectal bleeding
Joana Carvão, Filipe Vilas-Boas, Guilherme Macedo
Hospital Central do Funchal
A 41-year-old woman was referred to the gastroenterology department due to recurrent rectal bleeding that intensified during the menstrual cycle. Medical history was irrelevant. Blood tests revealed iron deficiency anemia. Endometriosis has been previously ruled out. Ileocolonoscopy revealed multiple, extensive, nodular red-purplish lesions in the sigmoid colon (between 10 and 20 cm from the anal verge), in relation with cavernous hemangiomas. The remaining colon, rectum and terminal ileum had endoscopic normal-appearing mucosa. Pelvic MRI and CT scan excluded involvement of adjacent structures. The patient was referred to sigmoidectomy.
