Bone stuck in diverticular ostia of the sigmoid colon: an endoscopic challenge

A 79-year-old woman, asymptomatic, was referred after observation of foreign body in the colon in an elective colonoscopy. No signs of alarm at physical examination and no pneumoperitoneum on the abdominal radiograph. In flexible rectosigmoidoscopy, in the sigmoid colon, we found a bone with both ends stuck in diverticular ostia. It presented inflammatory signs and granulation tissue with drainage of purulent content. After several attempts, with foreign body tweezers, we removed the bone, detaching one end at a time, without complications. The patient remained asymptomatic under surveillance, medicated with broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy and was discharged after 6 days of hospitalization.
