Spontaneous esophageal perforation: an uncommon complication of eosinophilic esophagitis

Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra
A 21-year-old woman with 4-years eosinophilic esophagitis diagnosis without current treatment complained of cervical sensation of food impaction by gizzard. Esophagoscopy revealed an untransposable esophageal stenosis at 22cm from the incisors and an 6-cm deep laceration with a 10-mm perforation orifice at the distal end of it. Endoscopic closure was performed using seven 11-mm repositionable hemoclips (Nova clip, Life Partners Europe) at the level of perforation and eight long standard hemoclips (EZ Clip, Olympus) to close the remaining laceration. A cervical computed tomography showed no pneumomediastinum or liquid collections. She had a favourable course with negative esophageal transit for fistula.
